The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.
The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.
IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Most IRS VITA and TCE sites are open through filing season, though some are open longer. Use the locator to find the VITA or TCE site nearest you or call 1-800-906-9887.
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) independently operates its Tax-Aide program of volunteers who prepare returns between January and April. Like VITA and TCE, Tax-Aide services are free to qualified taxpayers. Use the Tax-Aide Site Locator for the location of the closest available AARP Tax-Aide sites or call 1-888-227-7669.
In advance of preparing a return includes acquiring year-end Forms W-2 from employers, Forms 1099 from banks and other payers, other income documents, documentation of virtual currency transactions, and Forms 1095-A from the Marketplace for those claiming the Premium Tax Credit. You should confirm that each employer, bank or other payer has your current mailing address. Typically, these forms start arriving by mail in January. Review them carefully and, if any of the information shown is inaccurate, contact the employer, bank, or payer right away for a correction.
To gathering your records to prepare a return, well-organized records make it easier to provide answers if your return is selected for examination or if you receive an IRS notice.
